Alton Nelms, age 94, was called home to glory on September 18, 2019. He was born on July 23, 1925 in Pittsburg, Texas, to the late, Prince and Frances Nelms.
Alton was the fifth of eight children. He graduated from Frederick Douglass High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy on October 13, 1945 where he later was honorably discharged.
Alton was a devoted husband to the most precious and wonderfully loving woman, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Lillie Nelms. From this union, ten beautiful children became dancing stars, and you would know them by their walk, just like their father. He was a dedicated and loving father to Danny, Jacqueline, Belinda "Peaches", Alton Jr. "Chris" (Terry), Mike, Steve (Kate), Wonder, Teddy (Henrietta), Francine (Darryl), and Lorenzo (Laverne). Both Danny and Chris were sailors just like their father, and Steve is a Marine. Like father like sons, Mr. Nelms was a distinguished man and role model for his family.
Alton was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Alton Jr. "Chris", Danny, and Belinda "Peaches"
Alton surrendered his life to Christ at an early age. He recently celebrated 67 years of marriage with his wife, and his 94th birthday was in July. He played in the Baseball Negro League, and worked in construction for 30 years. Alton was an avid gardener, enjoyed watching baseball, and liked cowboy movies.
A man of distinction, Alton opened his heart to people from all walks of life. He was a humble, genuine, kind and outspoken man. To know Mr. Nelms is to know a "Man of Honor" and "Integrity". Those that knew him grew to love him and his comedic personality. His favorite remark was "It is going to be alright".
Alton was a beloved grandfather to more than one hundred grandchildren, and a great-grandfather to twenty-one great-grandchildren. He was a grand daddy to many, and a friend to most. Alton Nelms will be forever missed.
Mr. leaves a family legacy of unity in helping others that will forever be in our hearts.
