Angie L. Cunningham, a beloved resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2023, at the age of 71. She was born on December 1, 1951, in Falmouth, Kentucky, to Herbert and Hilda Mae (Craig) Moyer.
Angie was preceded in death by her parents, her cherished husband, Gary J. Cunningham, her son, Ernest Cunningham, and her siblings, Rebecca Moyer, Dennis Moyer, Gary Moyer, Buddy Moyer, and Patrick Moyer. She is survived by her loving children, Kevin (Mary) Cunningham, James (Colleen McClanahan) Cunningham, and Elizabeth (Alioune) Diop; her grandchildren, Abraham Diop, Charlotte Cunningham, Aziz Diop, Maggie Cunningham, Anta Diop, Asta Diop, and Sophia Diop; her siblings, Herbert (late Linda) Moyer, Cheryl (Gary) Royalty, and Beverly (John) Graver; her sisters-in-law, Bonnie Bray, Nancy (Roger) Cunningham, Linda (Byron) Hardy, and Susan (James) Hencin; and a host of other family members and friends.
Angie's life was marked by both resilience and love. At an early age, she learned the fragility of human life when her youngest sister, Rebecca, was born with a fatal health condition. Angie admired her mother's unwavering care for Rebecca, who lived for six months. However, just six months after Rebecca's death, Angie experienced another devastating loss when her father passed away suddenly. Despite the grief and trauma that marked her childhood, Angie found solace and strength in the love of her mother, treasured her sisters, and looked up to her older brothers.
In Angie's cherished childhood neighbors, Miss Mary and Ernest, she discovered a second family. The bond she formed with them brought immeasurable joy and care into her life. From sharing moments watching "Make Room for Daddy" to receiving daily snacks like RC Cola and M & M's, Angie cherished these simple yet meaningful memories. Ernest's thoughtful actions, such as renovating the pool and building Angie a playhouse, brought boundless happiness to her life. The hand-sewn curtains by Miss Mary adorned the playhouse, adding warmth and beauty that spoke volumes about the love Angie received from her extended family.
During her junior year in high school, Angie and her family relocated to Florida, where fate led her to meet her future husband, Gary Cunningham, in a college swimming class. Their first date blossomed into a lifetime of love and companionship. Angie was welcomed with open arms into Gary's family, and she formed a special bond with his younger sister, Nancy, who became a sister to her throughout her life. Together, Angie and Gary welcomed their children, Ernie, Kevin, James, and Elizabeth, and settled into life in Northern Kentucky.
Angie found immense meaning in her role as a wife and mother, taking great pride in caring for her children and celebrating their accomplishments. Her unconditional love permeated their lives, as she not only maintained a loving home but also actively engaged in their education and activities. Beyond her immediate family, Angie volunteered in classrooms, chaperoned field trips, and became a dedicated member of the PTA. She nourished her loved ones with her home-cooked meals each night.
In 1995, tragedy struck the family when Angie and Gary lost their eldest son, Ernie, in a car crash. The couple supported each other through this devastating loss and sought ways to honor Ernie's memory. They established a scholarship program at the local high school and distributed books to children in need, carrying forward Ernie's passion for Speech and Drama as well as his love for reading.
In a devastating turn of events, Angie also lost her beloved husband, Gary, in 1999 when he unexpectedly passed away in his sleep. Faced with the immense responsibility of caring for her family alone, Angie rose to the challenge, working full-time while providing unwavering love and support to her children.
As the family continued to grow, Angie embraced the new additions with open arms. James and Colleen became a family in 2000, Kevin and Mary wed in 2004, and Lizzy and Ali met in 2005. The arrival of grandchildren Abraham in 2006 & Charlotte in 2007 brought Angie pure joy, and she reveled in her role as a doting and hands-on grandmother. She even moved in with Lizzy and Ali for a few months to assist with the arrival of their second child, Aziz, sharing a room with Abraham! The love and laughter brought by the grandchildren were a source of immense happiness for Angie, especially when Maggie, Kevin and Mary's second child, and Anta, Lizzy and Ali's third child, joined the family.
In 2017, Angie, Lizzy, and Ali purchased a home together in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Angie continued her lifelong vocation of nurturing her loved ones and caring for her home. The arrival of granddaughter Asta in 2017 and Sophia in 2019 only expanded the love in her heart. Her family expanded further when she formed a sacred friendship with the Schwaller crew, her next-door neighbors. Angie firmly believed that love doesn't divide; it grows, and her love for her family exemplified this philosophy.
Angie's joy came from spending time with her family, hosting gatherings to celebrate birthdays and holidays, and offering unwavering support during difficult times. She had a profound ability to truly see and understand those she loved, going above and beyond to care for them and demonstrate her boundless love.
Throughout her last decade of life, Angie faced numerous health challenges, but she persevered, caring for her children and grandchildren, maintaining a home, and cooking for her family. Each day, she lived with love and celebration, surrounded by the love and admiration of those she cherished.
