Anita Mcgrady

Anita Paulette McGrady, age 69, passed away on Wednesday October 18, 2017. She is survived by her son, Charles C.M. Kellom; grandsons, Charles G. Kellom, and Nathan E. Kellom; four cousins, Landon (Anita) Tucker, Laci Tucker, Landon Jr. and Jamie Tucker; and a host of loving friends, neighbors, and former co-workers.


Anita was born November 16, 1947 in Cincinnati, OH to Paul McGrady and Lera Hennings (nee Tucker), both of whom preceded her in death. She graduated from Robert A. Taft High School in 1965. She went on to graduate from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) in 1969 with a Bachelor's degree in sociology, becoming the first person in her family to attend and graduate college. In 1970, she became the first person in her family to have a progressive career, beginning as a licensed social worker and moving up through the ranks at Hamilton County Job & Family Services over the course of 34 years. She retired from the county in 2004 as a Program Administrator. She was also the first person in her family to own a home, settling in Bond Hill. These were some of her proudest accomplishments.


More than that, Anita was a loving, intelligent, funny, and graceful Black woman. An avid singer, she regularly participated in the choir at St. Paul AME Church, where she was a member. Her creative spirit shined through her love of dance, poetry, storytelling, and art. Her house was decorated in African masks and statuettes, accented with the work of Black artists, and made full with love, laughter, and caring.


Services will be held Thursday Oct. 26th at 11am at Newcomer Funeral Home's Northwest location in Cincinnati (7830 Hamilton Ave. Cinti., OH. 45231). Visitation will begin at 10am. Flowers and cards are welcomed, but the family asks that you consider making a donation to the American Diabetes Association in her memory, either instead or in addition.
