Annease T. Comer

Annease Turner Comer was the second eldest of four children born to the union of Robert and Elease Turner (nee Hancock) on May 18, 1936 in Jefferson, Georgia. She accepted her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at an early age as a member of Greater Allen AME Church in Dayton, Ohio. She sang in the choir and was a member of YPD.

Annease at a young age demonstrated great intellectual curiosity and leadership. She represented Weaver Elementary as a participant in the Dayton Daily News - WHIO Quizdown program. Annease was the Secretary-Treasurer for Distributive Education Clubs of America, Central-Southern region.

Annease represented the West Side Branch of the YWCA in various capacities at Roosevelt High School. She was the President of the Y-Teen Inter-Club Council in Dayton, Ohio. She was appointed to the steering committee to plan the Y-Teen State Conference for two consecutive years and served as delegate at that conference. Annease served as YWCA Y-Teen Moderator of the panel for the "Dad's Night Out" program honoring fathers. The subsequent year she served as Chairman over the program.

The drive for success Annease displayed in high school continued as she earned a Bachelor's Degree from Wright State University. That degree was put to good use and Annease embarked on a 10 year teaching career with Cincinnati Public Schools.

A match between competing Dayton and Cincinnati bridge clubs caused Annease to meet her future husband, Marvin Comer. Their love for bridge was only exceeded by their love for each other and they wed in 1972.

Annease had a great love for the game of bridge. She added her formidable playing skills to those of her life partner, Marvin, to become a force to be reckoned with at the bridge table. As a player, her prominence rose nationally until achieving the rank of top 100 player in a membership of over 8,000. Annease continually held positions of leadership in the American Bridge Association since 1960, from parliamentarian to president. She "gave" it to her opponents and "gave back" to the members as a liaison between bridge associations, teaching new players, and serving as a mentor for directors. Whatever it took to advance the game of bridge and its players, Annease did willingly with excellence.

Annease had a deep passion for music. She was the early morning soloist and sang with the midmorning choir at Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church. She also sang with the Spirimelodaires of Union Baptist Church. Under musical director, Sis. Ruth Phillips, Annease blended her beautiful first soprano voice and delivered stirring solos like "Let Mt. Zion Rejoice".

Annease was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Troy Turner, Fred Turner. She is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Marvin Comer; son, Donald M (Merry) Comer; grandchildren, Wesley (Kaydian) Comer, Matthew (Abbey) Comer, Christine A. Abiera, Christine L. Abiera; great-granddaughter, Brinley Comer; sister, Winifred Phillips; sister-in-law, Betty Turner; nieces, nephews, and a host of other family members and friends.

Funeral Ceremony will be at 11:00 am Friday, July 31, 2020 with a visitation from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Northwest Chapel, 7830 Hamilton Avenue, Mt. Healthy, Ohio 45231. Entombment to follow at Vine Street Hill Cemetery.
