Bernard "Bert" Rooney, age 83, of Cincinnati, Ohio passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2022. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 26, 1939 to Bernard J and Margaret Doherty.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Rooney (nee Gutierrez), his parents, and his sister Roseanne Jones and his step-father, John R Leuthold.
Bert is survived by his son, Alejandro (Kathy) Rooney, his grandchildren, Andrew, Allie and Annie, and his siblings, John Leuthold and Catherine Brunner.
Bert was an avid boogie-woogie and honky-tonk piano player. He was self-taught beginning at the age of 16 and was highly proficient at playing by ear. In years past, he played the local music scene alongside Tom Dooley and blues legend Big Joe Duskin. Bert was also an avid sports enthusiast and lifelong fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals, and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. In addition to his prowess on the baseball field and basketball court, he was a talented amateur boxer and went on to box for the Army while he served in Germany.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at Newcomer Funeral Home, West Side Chapel, 3300 Parkcrest Lane, Cincinnati (45211) from 11 AM until the funeral service at 12 Noon. Burial will follow in Bridgetown Cemetery.
For the past 40 years, Bert donated monthly to a variety of children's charity organizations. In lieu of flowers, please give a donation to Cincinnati Children's Hospital, 3333 Burnet Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio (45229).
