Bitha Jo Shade, affectionately known as Jo, passed away on December 25, 2024, at the age of 88 in Edgewood, Kentucky. Born on March 5, 1936, in Carrollton, Kentucky, Jo touched the lives of many throughout her remarkable journey spanning nearly nine decades.
Her professional life was dedicated to the Mayfield Neurological Institute, presently recognized as Mayfield Brain and Spine, where she spent an impressive 50 years. Throughout her tenure, she served as a medical assistant, supervising scheduling and various personnel, and held numerous other positions, showcasing her dedication and expertise in the field. Jo’s commitment to her work reflected her kind and loving nature, making her not only a valued employee but also a cherished friend to many.
Jo's educational path began at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing, where she studied for two and a half years before transferring to teaching college. This pursuit of knowledge exemplified her thirst for learning and personal growth.
In addition to her professional achievements, Jo was an adventurous spirit who relished traveling. She enjoyed trips to Myrtle Beach and Ormond Beach, as well as visits to vibrant cities such as New York City, Chicago, New Orleans, and London. Her passion for theatre led her to attend productions in many locales, further enriching her life experiences.
Jo was instrumental in starting the after school program for Ludlow Schools called Clasp. She was also a very active member of Community Faith Church where she served on several committees.
Jo will be remembered fondly by her family, including her niece, Cindy (Glen) Wise, numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews, and a host of other family members and friends who were fortunate to know her warmth and kindness.
She is preceded in death by her father, Paul Craig Hanlon; her mother, Maude Hanlon (nee Blanton); her husband, Robert Shade; her sister, Sue (Howard) Story; and her nephew, Craig Story. As we celebrate the life of Bitha Jo Shade, we honor her legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to both her career and the many relationships she treasured.
