Donald I. Mitchell, known best as Tod, passed away July 17, 2017 at his Columbus home.
Tod was born in Zanesville, Ohio on October 10, 1938, to Robert and Georgia (Barr) Mitchell.
He was a 1956 graduate of Zanesville High School. He married Rosemary Nelson on October 14, 1961, and they lived and began their family in Honolulu while he was proudly serving in the United States Air Force and stationed at Hickham AFB in Hawaii.
After returning to Ohio, Tod continued his career in the glass industry where he began as a draftsman and working as an engineer for Hazel-Atlas, Brockway and Armstrong Mould. He finished his career as a mould engineer at Anchor Glass Container Corp.
With an avid curiosity, Tod always wanted to learn about mechanics and master how things worked. This was fostered by his grandfather Don Mitchell (PawPaw), with whom he spent hours tinkering with tools and learning the ins and outs of everything – from clocks to guns to cars. He could solve almost any mechanical mystery – and in his later years, expanded his knowledge to computers and gadgets of all sorts.
Over the years, Tod had many hobbies including photography and golf. More than anything, Tod loved his dogs (23 in total over the years), cooking, music, and his only granddaughter, Emily.
He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 40 years, Rosemary. He was also preceded in death by a son, Todd Robert Mitchell, his parents, Robert and Georgia (Barr) Mitchell, and recently, his faithful canine companion, Quincy.
He is survived by his daughter, Malia (Doug) Schaefer and granddaughter Emily Schaefer of Cincinnati, brother Jeffrey "Rusty" (Sandy) Mitchell of Lexington, and nephew Brian (Cari) Mitchell and great-niece Serena, as well as his new faithful canine companion, Rawleigh, and several aunts, uncles and numerous cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday August 12, 2017 at 3:00 PM at the Bridgetown Church of Christ, 3854 Race Road, Bridgetown, OH 45211.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family for a Memorial of their choosing.
