Dorothy "Dottie" Elrod Cook, a proud Kentucky Colonel, matriarch of her family, passed away surrounded by love on 1/2/2022. Born February 3, 1928, the middle child of Mattie Gaddis and Dozier Overton Elrod, she was raised in coal country, Blue Diamond, Kentucky. She attended Sullivan Business College in Louisville, Kentucky where she met and married Neal Cook. Together they raised three children Kenny, Mike and Sharon Cook on a city farm in Jeffersontown. Known for her sartorial style, Dottie was always impeccably dressed while she was heading up the PTA, 4H, a den mother for the Club Scouts, canning vegetables, feeding farm animals, taking the family to the Motor Speedway and throwing great Derby Parties. One of her greatest regrets was betting on every horse except Secretariat when she attended the 1973 Kentucky Derby.
After raising her children, Dottie used her fashion sense to open and run a shoe store, Sharon's Shoe Mart, and later sold shoes for the Shoe Gallery in Georgia. Dottie's meticulous care of attention made her an excellent picture framer, Blue Ribbon winning seamstress, trophy winning golfer and bowler. Her fudge was so good, her children used to pray to the fudge god for more.
Though a great lover of diamonds, T-birds and Cadillacs, Dottie's greatest love was for her family. A devoted daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother, she was generous with her time, attention, affection and shopping skills. Dottie frequently told her children, "Do unto others as you would have done to you," but she herself was quite capable of holding a grudge.
One of the highlights of Dottie's last twenty years was living in Cincinnati with four generations of her girls on Historic Dayton Street in the West End. During that time, she continued her love of baking red velvet cupcakes, pineapple upside down cake, planting white geraniums, being a voracious reader of history and novels, while using her charm to make an impact on all who met her. She will be greatly missed.
Dottie is survived by her children: Kenneth Cook (Janet), Michael Cook (LaVerne), and Sharon Cook (James Weithofer). She is the grandmother of David Cook, Christine Shaw (Dan), Danielle Yates (Brian), Casey Ross, Jami Mitchell (Jon), and the late Patricia Cook. She leaves behind great-grandchildren, Olivia, Kindell, Parker, Max, Bailee, Zoe, Josie, Jameson and Jude.
Her family requests kind words spoken or kind deeds done in her memory.
A graveside service will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery, 701 Baxter Avenue Louisville, Kentucky 40204, lot 565, section 38 on Saturday, January 8 at 11:00 a.m. Meet at the Grinstead entry at 10:45 AM.
