"On Tuesday, October 1st, 2019, Dorothy Catherine (Volpenhein) Eschan passed away at 93 years old. Dorothy was born on July 18, 1926 in Covington, KY to Carl and Elsie (Huepel) Volpenhein. On September 4, 1948 she married Donald Charles Eschan. They raised three sons, Michael (Pilar), David and James (Melissa) and one daughter, Donna (Stephen) Wilmhoff.
She is survived by sister Betty Fischer Gibson and brother Carl Volpenhein, her four children, 12 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald and brother Jake.
She was a loving and enthusiastic friend to all who knew her, and an encouraging presence to those who didn't.
Dorothy had a heart for education, nature, and serving others. As a young mother she worked as an elementary 1st and 2nd grade teacher at St Paul's School-Florence, as well as a labor and delivery nurse.
After retirement, she became a master gardener and volunteered extensively at Krohn's Conservatory. She loved being in nature, and set out to beautify the countryside when she and Donald bought the acreage that would become Eschan's Tree Farm & Nursery, or what her family called Rocky Road Farm.
She worked hard and loved harder; always serving, always laughing and encouraging and loving the life and people God so thoughtfully gave her.
Dorothy so cared for the education of future generations that she tutored with Alliance for Catholic Urban Education until she was 91 years old. She took the time and consideration to make sure everyone felt loved when in her presence, and she will be truly missed.
Services will be held Monday, October 7 at Saint Timothy's Parish in Union, Kentucky. Visitation begins at 4:30pm and services begin at 6:00pm. Burial will occur Tuesday, October 8 at Williamstown Veteran's Cemetery North at 11am.
