GRUBER, Elmer Joseph, age 97, passed away peacefully December 9, 2016 at the Deupree Cottages with his family at his side.

Cherished husband of 71 years to the late Eugenia Cecilia Gruber (nee Craig). Loving father of James J. (Charmaine) Gruber, Robert B. (Janice) Gruber, Mary Ann (William) Wiehe, Timothy X. (Peggy) Gruber. Loving brother of Walter, of Detroit, Michigan, the late William and brother of the late Mariel Griswold. Devoted grandfather of Andrea Gruber (Michael) Brunsman, Amanda Gruber (Daniel) Creech, Annette Gruber (Rick) Bell, Mark (Liz) Gruber, Tricia (Chad) Knight, Jeff (Brooke) Wiehe, Amy (Chris) Hastings, Brian (Jen) Gruber, Holly (Don) Spenthoff, Matthew (Brianne) Gruber, Kristy Gruber. Also, survived by 28 GREAT grandchildren whom he loved with all his heart and soul. And he knew each one by name and what they were about.

He now joins the love of his life, Eugenia, to spend eternity with among the heavens.

Elmer was a devout Catholic and daily communicant. Member of the 212th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, United States Army during World War II. A decorated war hero, receiving the Bronze Star Medal, Oak Leaf Cluster and the highest honor France could bestow upon those American fighters who fought on French soil for the liberation of France – The French Medal Of Honor. He was in combat 278 days including 221 consecutive days that included the Battle of the Bulge. 1st Lieutenant Gruber was an Artillery Reconnaissance Officer.

A director and retired executive vice president of Surgical Appliance Industries, Inc. completing 60 years with the firm. Elmer was the ultimate Cincinnati Reds fan attending 70 opening day games while maintaining four season tickets that he shared with friends and family. Also an avid Xavier University fan forever. A 1936 graduate of St. Xavier High School. A 1940 BA Latin graduate of Xavier University.

Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM, Tuesday December 13, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 2853 Erie Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45208, (Hyde Park), followed by Mass of Christian Burial. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Xavier High School, 600 North Bend Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45224.
