Henry Allen Deering

January 29, 1941 — April 27, 2021

Henry Allen Deering, son of the late Rev. Joseph and Mrs. Ethel Deering, transitioned from this life to life with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, April 27, 2021.

Henry was one of six siblings, born on Jan. 29, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio. As children of a pastor, all the Deering children were heavily involved in their father's church at an early age. Henry was no different, accepting Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 12 and serving as an usher until he left for college.

At a young age, Henry's parents recognized his strong academic ability and fought to protect and nurture that ability through the pursuit of a proper education. In a time in history when it was difficult for many African Americans to receive high school and college educations, Henry's parents fought to make sure his dreams of higher education would become reality. Henry was blessed to graduate from Walnut Hills High School. He later moved on to Depaw University for undergraduate studies, and he continued on to Howard University in pursuit of an MBA.

Henry's quest for knowledge through education showed throughout his professional career after college, as he was able to work in several different fields. From being a chemist for Seagram's, to a personnel director for the Community Action Center, to retiring from the IRS, Henry was a brilliant mind that touched everyone he worked with; not only by his work ethic, but by his kindness as well.

Those who knew and loved Henry know that he had many loves. Other than his family and friends, his biggest love was sports. Henry loved to re-tell his glory days on the gridiron at Depaw University as a football player, and the days on the basketball courts of Walnut Hills High School as a Varsity basketball player. Henry also loved fishing, classical music, reading his library of books, and telling good stories with family or a few drinking buddies.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Joseph Deering and Ethel Deering; brothers, James Deering and Edward Deering; sister, Venus Deering; and cousin, Isabelle Smith.

Henry leaves behind his sisters, Mary Lenon and Martha Deering; nieces, Marshan Johnson, Gail Deering, and Sydney Deering; nephews, Daniel Deering and Michael Deering; cousins, Dennis Deering, Evelyn Deering, and Sybil Davis, along with many grand nieces and nephews.
