Henry H. Ward of Dallas died September 27, 2011 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born in Sioux City, Iowa on September 3, 1924.
Mr. Ward was the son of doctors, Henry Tibbels Ward and Lenore Cummings Babcock. He was a graduate of Upper Darby High School and earned a BA from Wilkes College. Mr. Ward served with the 11th and 503rd Airborne troops for four years in the Pacific theatre during World War II. His group was the first to land in Japan. He received the Good Conduct Medal, two Bronze Stars, a Meritorious Unit Award, a Presidential Unit Award, and multiple other honors.
He was employed for many years as a sales manager and as a teacher in Pennsylvania vocational/technical schools. He was a builder and contractor. Mr. Ward was employed by Bridon America, Hazelton Brick Corporation, and Glen-Gery Brick Corporation.
Mr. Ward was an avid pilot. He was a founding member of the Wyoming Valley Pilot's Club and was a member of the Quiet Birdmen, Harrisburg Hangar. Mr. Ward applied his building skills to his hobby and built and flew a Pitts Special biplane.
Mr. Ward was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilkes-Barre, the Harvey's Lake Yacht Club, VFW Post 83, the American Legion of Dallas, Masonic Lodge 60 of Wilkes-Barre, Irem Temple, and AAONMS.
His wife, Mary Heness Ward, preceded him in death. Surviving are his daughter, Elaine Ward; granddaughter, Helen Ward Dietsch; son-in-law Craig Dietsch, of Cincinnati and his sister, Elizabeth Kitchen of Portland, Oregon.
A memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 97 South Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, with Reverend Robert Zanicky officiating. Family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 East Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
