On Tuesday, July 28, 2015, Herbert E. Kautzmann (better known as 'Opa' and/or 'Big Bear') succumbed to cancer at his home while surrounded by his children. He was born in Mannheim, Germany on March 17, 1943.
Herbert is survived by his Daughter, Inge (Todd Walker) Kautzmann; Son, Derek (Elizabeth) Kautzmann; 4 Grandchildren; Sister, Sharon (Richard) Lindner; and a host of other family members and friends.
He was recently preceded in death by his loving wife, Gail Barbara Kautzmann, and they are now happily reunited.
He was a devoted grandfather to his "Four Bears"; Rusty, Lance and Derek Kautzmann and Calvin Walker. He was always willing to drop everything in order to support his grandsons' activities. Some of their greatest memories of 'Opa' will be of him teaching them to fish at the summer cottage. Herb was enamored with his four grandsons and no matter what his day was like, he always greeted them with a smile and a hug.
Herb's life was a true example of an American success story. Orphaned at the age of eight in Germany, he moved to the United States to live with relatives. He arrived in the U.S. on a Friday and was in school the following Monday without the ability of speaking or reading English. He worked hard his entire life and attended college on a basketball scholarship where he earned his business degree. Herb's strong drive and will enabled him to work for a large American manufacturing company as Purchasing Materials Manager at Cincinnati Incorporated. This hard work and dedication allowed him to accomplish his primary goal of providing for his family in a way that he had not experienced growing up.
Herb enjoyed a close circle of friends who never had to question his loyalty. His generous heart would never allow anyone else to ever 'pick up the check' which was perhaps his way of celebrating all that he accomplished. He was never shy about expressing his thoughts and opinions and always loved a good joke.
Herbert Kautzmann was a mountain of a man and will always be remembered; not only for his stature but also his generosity. In keeping with his personal wishes, there will be no traditional funeral services. His family will celebrate all that was special about Herbert during a private family memorial service at their summer cottage where they spent so many cherished years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Herb's memory may be made to Hospice of Cincinnati who so lovingly cared for him during his final days. Donations may be made directly through the website www.hospiceofcincinnati.org
