Herbert “Pat” Albert Haverland, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on February 18, 2025, at the age of 95. Born the baby of 12 in Saint Bernard, Ohio, on November 1, 1929, Pat’s strong sense of humor and friendliness left a lasting impact on everyone who met him. In response to his silly ways his mother would say “Ain’t He Awful” even when he was an adult. In the neighborhood he was known for his annual “Clown Diving” show at Woodhaven Swim Club every year. He loved to go out to eat, especially breakfast. At the restaurants everyone “Knew His Name,” and were always happy to see him. As a loving parent he teased his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great great-grandchildren saying, “Go play with the razor blades on the railroad tracks.”
He started playing golf and smoking cigars (his binkie) at 40. Luckily for his family he went from smoking cigars to chewing them to finally chewing on a plastic binkie. Golf was a major activity in his life playing both in a men’s league and a couple's league with both his wives. He continued to have dinner with the couple's golf group even when he no longer could play.
Pat is survived by his loving family, including his daughter, Cindy (Curt) McLane; sons, Rick (Diane) Haverland, Randy (Margie and the late Nancy) Haverland, Rod (Cindy) Haverland, Rex (Jenny) Haverland, and Russ (Mary) Haverland. He is also cherished by his step-children, R. Bruce (Kathleen) Conly, James (Nancy) Conly, Patrick (Sarah) Conly, Connie (John) Burns, Ceci (Tom) Wille, John (Betsy) Conly, and Mary (Bob) Morrissey, as well as 17 grandchildren, 18 step-grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and many other family members and friends who will deeply miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Phyllis Jean (nee Ruebel) Haverland, with whom he shared 36 years of marriage, his second wife Patricia (nee Hensler) Haverland of 23 years, and 11 older brothers and sisters. He was also predeceased by his step-son Brian Conly and step-daughter Christine Stegmaier.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 10 am at St. Dominic’s church, 4451 Delhi Ave. Following the mass at about 11 am a Celebration of Pat’s life will take place in St Domonic’s O'Connor Hall.
