Herschel W. Hisle

July 17, 1927 — November 5, 2019

Hisle, Herschel W. age 92, of Mount Healthy, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. He was born in Irvine, Kentucky on July 17, 1927 to Bonnie Hisle and Verna Hisle-Huhn (nee Sparks).

Herschel signed on to the Rockford Rox for the 1948 season. Over the next four years, he played ball in Illinois, Utah, Texas, and New York. Most of his time was spent with the Ogden Reds where Herschel was a standout pitcher.

At age 17 he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Pelias during World War II.

A lifelong Reds fan, Herschel also coached several Cincinnati-area youth baseball teams, some of which included his son, Michael, and his nephew, David Huhn.

He also was an entrepreneur who operated Hisle Sporting Goods, a successful business for more than 20 years in College Hill.

In recent years, he was thrilled to be recognized for his athletic achievements and military service. He enjoyed an "Honor Flight" trip to Washington, D.C., with other military veterans. In 2014, he cheered as he was inducted into the athletic hall of fame at Bellevue High School, where he was a standout in two sports: football and baseball.

Herschel loved Cincinnati traditions, including Skyline Chili. Until his health failed, he would often join his son, Michael, for lunch at area Skyline restaurants.

Herschel believed in physical fitness so much he was still routinely riding his bicycle after he turned 90.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Atha Lois Hisle; brother, Dorland "Smokey" Hisle, step-father, John Huhn. Herschel is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Lois A. Hisle (nee Gamble); children, Mike (Janice) Hisle, Kim (John) Hiatt, Sandy Hensley; 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; brother, John "Jay" (Rita) Huhn; nieces, nephews, and a host of other family members and friends.

Funeral Ceremony will be at 11:00 am Monday, November 11, 2019 with a visitation from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Northwest Chapel, 7830 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231. Entombment to follow at Arlington Memorial Gardens.
