John Truman Songer was born to Mary and Truman Songer on September 2nd, 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a young boy John started to work to help support his family during the great depression. At the age of eight years old, he delivered groceries to his neighbors. From that point in his life, he never stopped working.
John met the love of his life Melba June Poe. Only a war could keep them apart.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Melba June Songer and parents. John is survived by his beloved children Joseph E. Songer, John W. (Beth) Songer, Jill A. (Brian) Van Deventer, and Jack S. (Diana) Songer, Grandchildren, Jacob, Rachel (Jason), Julie (Matt), Jainah, Great-Grandchildren, Wren, Jordan Truman, and Mayson; and a host of other family members and friends.
In 1950, John joined the United States Marine Corps. He followed in his Uncle John’s footsteps who was a World War 2 combat veteran. In June of 1950, John was in the third US invasion force into South Korea. While serving in Korea, John and his Platoon Sergeant went out to rescue a group of Marines that were taken prisoners of war. John was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery. After his tour in combat, John returned to Camp LeJeune. Once again, he was asked to sacrifice for his Country. John boarded a bus and was taken to Nevada. As part of his service, he was taken to the desert and participated in the above ground testing of a nuclear weapon. After the test, he returned to Camp LeJeune.
In April of 1953, John married Melba in the Nazarene church. They had many travels and adventures. When they returned to Cincinnati, they had four children John, Jill, Jack and Joe. John worked as a Teamster until he retired in 1985. Upon his retirement, he continued to work with a fellow Teamster in landscaping.
Throughout John’s life he was a model father figure to everyone he came into contact with. His love of baseball allowed him to see spring training games in Florida and Arizona. Through his actions, he taught others to be unselfish, have purpose, enjoy life and family is important.
Dad, you were loved by all and will greatly be missed.
