Johnnie Mae Baker was born on April 8, 1928 in Gaston, Alabama to the union of Jasper and Eula (nee Smith) Woodruff. She was the oldest of seven children.
When the family relocated to Cincinnati she attended Cincinnati Public Schools. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Metropolitan Baptist Church. Johnnie Mae was employed at several different jobs, one of them being the old General Hospital. Another employment was the Terrace Hilton Hotel in downtown Cincinnati. She married Edward Smart, Sr. and their son, Edward Smart, Jr., was born. After her husband's tour of duty with the military the couple decided to go their separate ways.
Later she met and married William Baker. Most folks referred to him as "Bud". Bud played the bass fiddle and Johnnie Mae would occasionally attend the gigs with him. One of the highlights of her life was attending birthday celebrations for her younger sisters. This would usually start with dinner and then just be a "girls night out". When the birthday celebration turned into a surprise birthday party for her she would be speechless.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four younger siblings. Johnnie Mae leaves to cherish her memory; her loving son, Edward Smart, Jr.; grandchildren, Erica Coleman, Monique Smart, and Tevin Griffen; her sisters, Mildred Thomas, and Yvonne (Timothy) Davis; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, along with a host of cousins, other family members and friends.
