Ligo, Julia Gwen, fondly known as "Judy," peacefully passed away on December 4, 2023, at the age of 87, surrounded by her loving daughters.
Born in Mercer, Pennsylvania, on December 8, 1935, to the late Russell and Florence McCartney (nee Leyshon), Judy is now reunited with her parents and her late husband, John Edwin Ligo.
Judy is survived by her daughters, Lynn (David) Crane and Gwen (Dan) Brugger, as well as her grandchildren, Drew (Kelsey) Crane, Bryan (Madison) Crane, Rachel Brugger, Rebekah Brugger, and one great-grandchild on the way.
A graduate of Mercer Area High School, Judy earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Allegheny College and later pursued a Reading Specialist/Master's degree from Westminster College. Her passion for education led her to a fulfilling career teaching Language Arts at Mercer Area Middle/High School.
In addition to her dedication to education, Judy served as the secretary for East Lackawannock Township and played an active role in her community and church. Following her retirement, she embraced a new chapter in Destin, Florida, relishing the sunny days, cultivating lasting friendships, and continuing her commitment to community service through volunteering for various organizations.
Judy's zest for life was evident in her love for learning and meeting new people. Her global travels enriched her with captivating stories, which she joyfully shared with those around her. The legacy she leaves behind for her children and grandchildren is one of a deep passion for learning, a love of travel, and an appreciation for new experiences.
At this time there are no formal services planned. The family plans to hold a celebration of Judy's life at a later date. In loving memory of Judy, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.
