Mabel L. Simpson

March 15, 1938 — September 27, 2017

Mabel Louise Payne Simpson, age 79, entered into rest on September 27, 2017. She was born March 15, 1938 to Charles Payne and Vesta Lee Talley Payne Bacchus in Newport, Kentucky. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elseworth D. Simpson; three brothers, Charles Payne Jr., Robert Payne, and P. Lawrence Bacchus, Jr.; and three children Elesworth Jr., Donald, and Barbara Simpson.

Mabel attended school in Newport, Kentucky, graduated from Hughes High School, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1955 and from St. Elizabeth Hospital Nursing School, Covington, Kentucky in 1958.

She married Elesworth Simpson, a Sargent in the United States Air Force. They lived in several areas until he retired from the service in 1972 and returned to settle down in Cincinnati. Mabel worked as a Registered Nurse in hospitals around the country, and she retired from Cincinnati Children's and Jewish Hospitals.

After retirement she went on to work part-time at The Learning Center Academy in Cincinnati. She truly enjoyed going to work each day and interacting with the children, their families, and the staff. Eventually she had to stop working but that didn't keep her from continuing to give to others. In 2008 she began serving as a volunteer for a community health outreach program for uninsured women. She served faithfully each year through 2016. Regardless of whether she was working or volunteering, she was always dependable and committed to her assigned task.

She was soft spoken, kind, gentle, and gracious with a heart full of compassion and acceptance. She opened her home to anyone in need of a meal or a place to temporarily call "home". She turned no one away. If she called you "friend", you were that for life.

Mabel was a passionate reader of all books but especially romance and mystery novels. If a book was written, she probably had read it. She also loved football and spent Sunday afternoons and Monday nights discussing the games with her son.

She never allowed her health to rule her life and she refused to use it as a crutch. She strongly believed that if you take care of your body, your body will take care of you. She strived to enjoy life to the fullest.

She is survived by her children Cheryl Simpson Smith and Ronald Simpson (Shelly) of Cincinnati; sisters Patricia Bacchus of Cincinnati, Beryl Bufford (Mark) and Barbara McBee of Cleveland; grandchildren Tazmia, Talon, Nakesha, Tanesha, Marya, Anthony, Amanda and Cameron; great grandchildren Neivial, Aaron, Trevon, Peyton, Maximus, Maison, Sophia, and Tiranna; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral Ceremony will be 8:00 pm Thursday, October 5, 2017 with a visitation from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home - Northwest Chapel, 7830 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231.
