HOOKS, Mary L., born Mary Louise Johnson, on November 19, 1919 in Montgomery, Alabama, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a teenager in Jacksonville, Florida, she worked as a seamstress after school. She accepted Christ as her Savior at the age of 18 years. She joined the church and sang gospel music in the choir with her exceptional soprano voice. She met and fell in love with Derry Lee Hooks Sr., and the two were married on July 2, 1938 in Montgomery, Alabama. They moved to Cincinnati in 1942. After 40 years of marriage, in 1978, Derry preceded her in death. Their union was blessed with five children; Derry Jr., Glorea, Levi, William and Clifford.
Mary lived a long and full life. She traveled extensively with her daughter and son-in-law, Ministers Melvin and Glorea McGee. They traveled and ministered across the country doing missionary work from 1987-2012. Mary was a fun-loving person who was always smiling, deeply loved her family and even during several years of illness always put her family first, especially her children.
She was the oldest of 7 siblings all of which preceded her in death. Her youngest son, Clifford E. Hooks also preceded her in death in 1999. She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life four children, Derry L. Hooks II and his wife Joyce, Glorea L. Hooks-McGee and her husband Melvin, Levi C. Hooks and William H. Hooks; four grandchildren, Titus Hooks-Bell, Contrina Hooks-Harris, Derry L. Hooks III and Traci Hooks-Prayther.
Mary will be loved and missed by a host of many, many nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and other relatives and friends that will continue to keep the loving memory of Mary L. Hooks alive in their hearts.
