Melvin Mayfield age 87, of Forest Park, Ohio passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022. He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on May 15, 1935 to the late John W. and Fannie M. Mayfield (nee Beasley).
Melvin is survived by daughters, Vicki L. (Bret) Brady and Venicia Mayfield; grandchildren, Adam Brady, Maylssa (Zach) Peterson, Grayson Brady, and Michael Mayfield; and great-grandson, Wyatt Peterson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn O. Mayfield; siblings, Ruth Jones, Mildred Hatcher, Pauline Walker, Ruby Davis, Charles Mayfield, and Leona Johnson.
Melvin was an avid Reds fan and an outstanding baseball player in his own right as a younger man. He loved boating and was an active member of the US Coast Guard Auxilliary for many years. Melvin was also a military veteran who served his country in the United States Air Force for four years reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was very involved in community service as a member of Gothic Lodge 122 of the Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons. Family always came first, so he was a wonderful father and grandfather who always found time to attend plays, ball games, concerts, competitions, or any of the myriad activities everyone was involved in. He was like a second father to his nieces and nephews and was a wonderful example of love, dedication, sacrifice, faith, determination, and hard work. He has been reunited with the love of his life whom he was with for more than 60 years and has missed terribly since her passing.
A visitation will be held from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Thursday, July 21, 2022 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Northwest Chapel, 7830 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231.
