Life's Reflection
ROBERT OBBIE HAMMONDS was born to the union of Ben and Maggie Hammonds on October 29, 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Robert was the oldest son of nine siblings: Betty Polk, Lillie Cherry-Young (deceased), Larry Hammonds, Millie "Tina" Howard, Jeffrey (Sarah) Hammonds, Mary Catherine (Steve) McGaughlin, Ben Jr. and Johnny Hammonds. four stepsiblings: Bruce Holloway (deceased), Lothell Holloway, Ronald (Nola) Holloway and Regina Holloway. On January 22, 2012, Robert had a visitor who said, I see your pain and suffering, the weary hours and sleepless nights are passed. He gently closed those lovingly eyes and whispered, "Come my son, it's time to go home."
At an early age, Robert was baptized and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at Bethlehem Temple Pentecostal Church under the leadership of Bishop Milton Young. He graduated from Woodward High School. He met and married Joann Hill-Hammonds in 1991 and they enjoyed 21 years together.
Robert moved to Newark, New Jersey in the 1960's and later returned to Cincinnati where he lived the remainder of his life. Among other jobs, he worked for the Community Action Commission until his health failed. He was an active member of the Grand Chapter of Ohio Royal Arch Masons, St. John Lodge #3, and Prince Hall in Cincinnati.
Robert was a father to many. He was active in the lives of all twelve of his children and grandchildren. He never met a stranger and was well liked throughout the community. He was a man full of knowledge on many subjects. He was outspoken and willing to listen to problems or offer advice regardless of the hour. He enjoyed fixing things, particularly automotives. He loved being on the computer, discussing politics, watching the news and spending time with friends and family. Robert was a man full of love for his family and others and loved being surrounded by his family and friends.
Robert leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memories: his loving and devoted wife Joann, step-mother Ida Hammonds, mother-in-law Herni Jean Reynolds, sister-in-law Shirley (James) Lindsey, eight sons, Robert Jr. (Avonda), Mark, Darrell, Aaron (Amy), Ajene (Jackie), Andwele, Cameron and James; four daughters, Sabrina (Mervin) Martin, Cherise Coston, Dedra Conwell, and Zara Hammonds; one step-daughter, Martina Martin, 35 grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
