Robert E Young

November 11, 1935 — April 22, 2020

Robert Estill Young, 84, of Lakeside Park, KY, was called home to our Lord on Wednesday, April 22, 2020. From his birth in Cincinnati, OH, on November 11, 1935 to his passing, he enriched the lives of people around him with kindness, laughter, and his love for music. All who knew Bob were touched by his personality and his ability to convey to others the values he held dear.

Bob was a loving husband to his wife of 39 years, Linda Young. He became the face of Wert Music, and local musicians, music teachers, and music students could count on him for attentive service, support, and encouragement. During his years at Wert Music, Bob was recognized by the Northern Kentucky Band Directors Association for his commitment to music education. With his huge smile and boisterous laugh, he was truly a friend to all, and a stranger to none.

Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army and was deployed during the Berlin Crisis in Germany. He was a sergeant, a sharpshooter, and was skilled with mortar systems, air defense artillery, and radio operations. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and his unit earned a Presidential Citation for their service.

Masonic organizations played a major role in Bob's life. He was a Past Master of Good Faith Lodge #95 Free and Accepted Masons, Erlanger, KY, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a Knights Templar in the York Rite of Freemasonry, Newport Commandery #13. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. After his stepdaughter, Susan, joined Job's Daughters, Bob and his wife, Linda, became very active in that organization. Together they served as Guardian and Associate Guardian of Bethel #6 and Grand Guardian and Associate Grand Guardian of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In recognition of his accomplishments, contributions, deeds, and outstanding service, Bob was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel, the highest honor conferred by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Service was important to Bob, but so was having a good time with friends and family. He was an avid dancer. He enjoyed roller-skating and showing off his skills at Jimmie's Rollerdrome. He also held a 2nd degree black belt in karate. On a nice day, you could find him boating with Linda on the Ohio River. He often shared stories with his grandkids about swimming with the stingrays while on a cruise with family. His stingray necklace from that trip was a cherished souvenir.

Bob's grandchildren received most of his attention during his retirement years. He was a proud grandfather who adored his three grandchildren. He happily traveled near and far for sports games, dance competitions, and band concerts. He loved watching them grow, and would relish any opportunity to pass along his wisdom and experience.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mary Young; stepmother, Mildred Young; sister Rosalie Fedders; and brother, Richard Young. Bob is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Young; beloved stepdaughter, Susan (Marc) Cassidy; cherished grandchildren Anne, Ava, and Will Cassidy; his faithful dog, Sam; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Due to the Global Covid-19 Pandemic, services for Bob Young will be private. Thank you for your understanding during this challenging time. Bob will be laid to rest at Evangelical Union Cemetery in Sunman, IN. A celebration of life will be held at a later date once restrictions are lifted.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Bob's memory to the Florence Community Band, the SCPA Fund at 108 West Central Parkway, Cincinnati OH, 45202, or the Cincinnati Arts Association.
