Sarah was born on July 23, 1944, the 6th of 11 children to the late John D. and Fannie Sherman of McNeil, Arkansas. She departed this life after a long battle on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Mercy Hospital in Fairfield, Ohio.
Sarah accepted Christ at the early age of 9 and was baptized at the New Zion Hill Baptist Church in Stephens, Arkansas. In 1963, she graduated from South Side High School in McNeil, Arkansas. She was Miss South Side High!
Sarah met and was married to Booker (Skip) Mixon Jr. on August 15, 1965 at a Chapel in San Antonio, Texas. Their union produced 5 children – 3 boys and 2 girls.
For several years Sarah worked as a prep-cook at General Mills and Darden Foods restaurants, until her health began to fail.
Sarah was a devoted and faithful wife. She was a loving mother. She was treasured as a sister, auntie, friend and neighbor. She was down-to-earth, sometimes feisty, sometimes stubborn, a master of wise-sayings, and the possessor of an outstanding sense of humor. Sarah was patient and generous.
Sarah was preceded in death by two sisters: Bernice Smith and Shalatha (Orene) Lewis, and two brothers: Herman Lee Sherman and Willie B. Sherman.
Sarah is survived by her husband of 48 years, Booker (Skip) Mixon Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio. She leaves behind five children: Dorothy J. Haynes (John) of Cincinnati, Michael E. Mixon (Marie) of Cincinnati, David C. Mixon of Cincinnati, Adam M. Mixon (Adrienne) of Birmingham, Alabama, and Susan D. Newsome (Brian) of Tampa, Florida. Sarah is also survived by two sisters: Dorthea Fay Brown of Waldo, Arkansas, and Ollie V. Henry of San Antonio, Texas; three brothers – Samuel L. Sherman Sr., of Dallas, Texas, Ozell Sherman of Texarkana, Texas, Ovell Sherman of Dallas, Texas, and Marcell Sherman of San Antonio, TX. Sarah leaves behind scores of grandchildren, nieces, nephews.
Sarah will certainly be missed by all who knew her.
Funeral service for Sarah Nell Mixon, age 68 of Cincinnati, will be Friday, March 1, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Newcomer Funeral Home - Hamilton Chapel. Pastor Adam Mixon and Minister Michael Mixon will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 1, 2013 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Newcomer Funeral Home - Hamilton Chapel.
