Shirley was born on July 11, 1943 in Cincinnati, OH to Earnest Leslie and Mildred Leslie (nee Chester). After a long battle with health issues, she peacefully went to sleep on January 23, 2021.
Shirley May Leslie was joined in matrimony to Jerome Thomas on November 16, 1963. Shortly after, she travelled the world with him while he was serving in the Air Force. They were married for 49 years until her beloved husband passed.
Family was most important to her. She was mama to her four girls and also to others. She was nana to her grandkids, great grandkids, and many others who were not related to her. And Aunt Shirley to numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley loved reading, gardening, and planting flowers. She was a strong supporter to her kids and grandkids; attending sporting and special events. And was a supporter to veterans in honor of her husband. She was passionate about crocheting countless blankets for nursing homes, family, friends, newborns, and most recently dialysis patients. She never accepted money for them. She always said it was her special gift from God to bring joy to those who received them. Never making one for herself.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Annie Ruth Hill and Lorean Cody-Walker, and in-laws.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her surviving sister Earnestine Baskerville; her daughters Brenda Thomas, Pamela Givens (Roman), Theresa Thomas, and Lisa Thomas; and James L Madaris III (Michelle) who was like a son. Her grandkids, Denise (Gary), Desiree, Brittany, Taelor, Donovan, Noelle, Miyah, Samuel Jr., Joy, and Clemonie; great grandkids Lauryn and Jeremiah; and many relatives and friends who will miss her deeply.
A memorial visitation will be held Friday February 5, 2021 from 10am-12pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, 7830 Hamilton Avenue, Mt. Healthy. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family has elected to not host a repast after the memorial visitation.
