Verla Sue King

Verla Sue King passed away on February, 25, 2019 in Cincinnati, OH at the age of 71.
She was born the oldest of three children in Ft. Wayne, IN on July 30, 1947. From that day on, she was always known as "Sue" to those who knew and loved her. After spending her early childhood in Ft. Wayne, Sue and her family moved to Lansing, MI where she remained until graduating from Sexton High School in 1966.
That same year, Sue began attending what was then known as Cincinnati Bible College in Cincinnati, OH before later transferring to Milligan College in Johnson City, TN where she studied music education and music theory.
By the age of 23, Sue married Stephen King of Springfield, TN before eventually returning to Cincinnati to raise her three children and start her career. She worked as a medical transcriptionist for a local hospital and as a worship leader at Bridgetown Church of Christ for many years, until finally earning both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Cincinnati Christian University at the age of 53. This accomplishment allowed Sue to achieve her dream of working as a licensed marriage and family therapist, which she continued to do for the remainder of her life.
Those who knew her best would describe Sue as strong, wise, tenacious, hard-working, and straight-talking. She was a brilliant musician, a problem solver, a proud mother, a survivor, and a loyal friend. She loved the Lord and strived to serve and please Him in all she did.
Sue is preceded in death by her mother and father, Velda Godlove Matthews and Charles Matthews, as well as her former husband, Stephen King. She is survived by her three children, Shelley Robinson, Susan King, and Shana Kidd, in addition to her sister, Dana Butler, her brother Mark Matthews and his wife, her two sons-in-law, seven nieces and nephews, five grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Bridgetown Church Of Christ, 3854 Race Rd, Cincinnati, OH, 45211. A visitation will begin at 9am, followed by a memorial service from 11am-12pm. A luncheon will be provided by the church immediately following the memorial for all who wish to attend.
