Vernon "June" Stacy, Jr., age 90, of Hebron, Kentucky passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2024. He was born in Hazard, Kentucky on September 28, 1933 to the late Vernon and Florence Stacy (nee Risner).
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Jenny Marie Stacy (nee Newberry) and six siblings. Vernon is survived by his beloved children, Kimberly B. Delgado, Glenda K. (Paul) Raney and Jeffrey B. (Jeanne) Stacy; grandchildren, Kristina (Bobby) Jerauld, Brett Stacy, Adam (Dawn) Raney and Josh (Heidi) Raney; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Lacey, Courtney, Kendal, Brynn, Maddox, Landon and Hadley; siblings, Golden Harvey, Ronald Stacy, Shirley Smaha and Tommy Stacy; and a host of other family members and friends.
Vernon was a talented basketball player, who was recruited by Adolph Rupp to play for the University of Kentucky. He declined this prestigious honor to marry the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Jenny Newberry. They went on to share 65 years together raising their family. Shortly after this, he was drafted into the Army, where he proudly served in the honor guard and played on the post basketball team.
Vernon was an avid gardener who took pride in harvesting vegetables from his vast garden yearly to feed his family. There are many fond memories of back porch bean breaking and hauling his children on a little red wagon with a stash of pumpkins that he had grown. While gardening, the family dogs would linger under the trees, patiently waiting for him to show them some affection once he finished. They wouldn't leave his side until he had completed his tasks.
He worked in the machine tool industry; always the handyman who could fix anything. He spent 33 years at American Tool Works Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was very proud that he could trouble shoot any machine that was causing problems. He traveled across the United States to lend his expertise to others, solving the issues when when not even the engineers were able to do so. One of the highlights of his career was when Ronald Reagan stopped at American Tool Works and took a photo with him.
Vernon was a very devoted family man who saw the good in everyone. He was very charming and anyone who met him instantly fell in love with him and his personality. He was willing to help anyone, often lending a hand to those in need, no matter the task. He took on the fatherly role to several nieces and nephews, ensuring they got haircuts, were disciplined when necessary and even taking them on vacations.
Vernon's family would like to especially thank his caregivers from the VA Hospital, Amber, Jayla, Betty and Jennifer. They were the light of his life the past several years. They loved and cared for him like a grandfather.
He was a believer in Christ and this enabled him to keep his great sense of humor and perseverance up until the end of his life.
In loving memory of Vernon, contributions may be made to Tri-State Honor Flight at www.honorflighttristate.org/donate. Vernon was honored to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime experience and it was truly one of the best days of his life.
